The test that matters most for chillies: aflatoxin (mould).

Aflatoxin comes from mould, and chillies pick it up when they dry slowly in heat and humidity or are stored damp. So we test every lot for it before packing, at a third-party lab accredited by NABL to ISO/IEC 17025, against the limit your country sets. The test certificate ships with the lot.

Chillies: rejection parameter and benchmark limit
ParameterBenchmark limit
AflatoxinTotal ≤10 µg/kg (AFB1 ≤5 µg/kg)

These are benchmark figures from the EU, Codex and the FDA. The legal limit depends on the destination, so we take the exact figure from the buyer's current national standard and write it into the contract.

Questions buyers ask about chillies

Where are your chillies grown?

Guntur (Andhra Pradesh) and Byadgi (Karnataka). The crop is grown for us on contract there and processed in our own units.

How do you grade chillies?

Heat (SHU) and colour (ASTA). The typical range for Indian origin is Byadgi 8,000 to 16,000 SHU; Teja S17 up to 100,000 SHU. The figure for your lot is on its certificate of analysis.

What do you test chillies for before they ship?

Aflatoxin (mould), the most common reason chilli lots are rejected. We test every lot for it before packing, against the limit in your country's standard, which goes into the contract. As a benchmark: aflatoxin total ≤10 µg/kg (AFB1 ≤5 µg/kg). Chillies also ship with an aflatoxin test certificate and a Sudan dye I to IV (colour adulterant) test certificate.

What is the minimum order, and can I get a sample?

The minimum is 0.5 MT per spice, and 1 MT for private label. We send a sample with the CoA for its lot before you pay. You pay the courier, and approval usually takes about 5 days.
